Asia Futurism and the Non-Human Other
Organized by Tiffany jaeyeon Shin in conjuction with her solo show, Like Water and Oil Never Assimilating
Facilitator: Danielle Wu
Date: Wednesday, September 13, 7 – 9 PM
This will be an open discussion on Techno-Futurism, hyper technologized depictions of the future, and the problematics within white domination of near-human machines. We will begin with explorations of Techno-Orientalism, racialized rationale that views Asians and Asian culture as expendable technology. From movies such as Blade Runner and Ghost in the Shell to artists like Nam June Paik, Asianness has been defined as an eroticized tool to validate white superiority while blackness is unmodern and irrational. We will also examine the little- discussed overlaps between Techno-Orientalism, Afrofuturism, and Asiafuturism, as well as artists who resist dominant depictions of the Other’s relationship to technology.
